Drupal - Installation ( Windows)

Drupal Installation in Windows environment is fairly simply and easy. If you are running a WAMP server or standalone packages, you can set up your first drupal site in matter of few minutes. If you need to set up Apache, PHP, MySQL you can read and configure you window's system here.

This article assumes that you are configuring Drupal 6.x Installation in your Windows Environment.

Download the latest version of Drupal from http://drupal.org. I am using drupal 6.15 for my test purpose. You will get a tarball file, Extract the contents of the tarball using WinRAR or WinZip or any other file decompresser application.

Assuming you have initially configured the Apache and PHP, you can copy the extracted contents to your webroot folder. Since I don't use the defualt webroot, I changed it to C:\Projects\ and make the changes in Apache's configuration file to read the webroot/Document Directory as C:\Projects\

Also, as I use IIS web server for my other projects I changed the Apache port to listen to port 90 rather than the default 80. This is not necessary if you are running only Apache Web Server.

Once you have copied the extracted files to your Apache Document root, you need to do a few housekeeping thing before you can actually install drupal in your system.

Go to [YourDrupalFolder]\sites\default and make a copy of default.settings.php. Rename the copied file as settings.php. --- This is Important.

If you want to use the clean URLs feature of drupal you need to edit your Apache Web Configuration file httpd.conf to enable that feature. Clean URLs are nice feature that allows the webspiders to crawl the site smoothly for indexing. In layman terms, it will simply allow browser address bar to read as http://www.example.com/node/1/ rather than http://www.example.com/?q=node/1.

Installing Apache Web Server on Windows Vista Systems

Windows Vista's User Account Control (UAC) may cause permission issues in your Apache installation. The first step to running the apache web server on Windows Vista is to get the MSI package of Apache from the Apache Web Site. Download the MSI Package from http://httpd.apache.org/ .You can download any one depending upon your need.
Say if you want to have SSL precompiled to you Web Server Configuration, you download this package :
Win32 Binary including OpenSSL 0.9.8h (MSI Installer): apache_2.2.9-win32-x86-openssl-0.9.8h-r2.msi
If you don’t want SSL then simply use this one,
Win32 Binary without crypto (no mod_ssl) (MSI Installer): apache_2.2.9-win32-x86-no_ssl-r2.msi
Note: At the time of writing this article, Apache 2.2.9 was the latest version.

Installing Apache:
1. Click the Start ORB
2. Search for Command Prompt [START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES >COMMAND PROMPT]
3. Right Click on the icon and Run as Administrator.
4. Navigate to where you have the Apache MSI saved at (e.g. cd c:\Users\username\Documents if the file is saved to your Documents Directory)
5. Run the Apache MSI Installer with the command:
c:\Users\\Documents> msiexec /i apache*.msi
6. Select Next
7. Accept the terms in the license agreement.
8. Select Next
9. Fill in your server information if it is known. A typical setup will use the "for All Users, on Port 80, as a Service" option. If setting up as a test machine, you may use localhost as the Network Domain and the Server Name. Select Next.
10. Select the Typical Setup
11. Choose a Destination Folder for the Installer to place the program files into. Note: the default Apache Installer location is C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2.
12. Select Finish
13. If a Firewall is enabled, make sure that port 80 and port 8080 are unblocked and open.
14. To test if the Apache server is running, open up http:\\localhost in a browser. A plain black and white page should come up that reads "It Works!"
Making Changes To httpd.conf
1. Click the Start orb
2. Search for Notepad [START --> ALL --> ACCESSORIES --> NOTEPAD]
3. Right Click on the icon and Run as Administrator
4. Now Select File > Open from Notepad’s Menu and browse for apache configuration file.
The changes to apache web server configuration file is needed if you want to change to run apache on different port, or say you want to switch off the directory browsing, but that is different part of story. For now you have successfully setup, Apache Web Server on your Window’s Vista System.

Rumtek Monastery - Dharma Chakra Centre

Rumtek Monastery, also known as the Dharmachakra Centre, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the State of Sikkim, India. Rumtek is located approx. 24 km from Gangtok, the capital of the Sikkim, at an altitude of about 1500 m. The best season to visit, in terms of weather, is March to late May, or from October to mid-December. The languages spoken in the area are: Sikkimese, Pahari (the local Nepalese dialect), Hindi, Tibetan and English. You can go to Rumtek in Tourist Cabs/Taxies.

Originally built by the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje in 16th century, Rumtek served as the main seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage in Sikkim for some time. But when the 16th Karmapa arrived in Sikkim in 1959, after fleeing before the Chinese occupation of Tibet, it was in ruins. Despite being offered other sites, the Karmapa decided to rebuild Rumtek. To him, the site possessed many auspicious qualities and was surrounded by the most favorable attributes. For example, flowing streams, mountains behind, a snow range in front, and a river below. With the generosity and help of the Sikkim royal family and the Indian government, it has been built by the 16th Karmapa as his main seat in exile.

After four years, construction of the monastery was completed. The sacred items and relics brought out from Tsurphu Monastery, the Karmapa's seat in Tibet, were installed. On Tibetan New Year's day (Losar) in 1966 the 16th Karmapa officially inaugurated the new seat called, "The Dharmachakra Centre, a place of erudition and spiritual accomplishment, the seat of the glorious Karmapa."

Rumtek Monastery is currently the largest in Sikkim. It is home to the community of monks and where they perform the rituals and practices of the Karma Kagyu lineage. A Golden Stupa contains the relics of the 16th Karmapa. Opposite that building is a college, Karma Shri Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies. It is believed that the monastery is an absolute replica of the original Kagyurpa Monastery in Tsurphu, Tibet. The center houses some of the world's most unique religious scriptures, manuscripts and religious art objects.

The monastery holds annual events for the public. Two of the most festive and important events are held each summer and winter. In the fourth lunar month of the Tsurphu Tibetan calendar either the Guru Rinpoche or the Vajrakilaya Drupchen (great sadhana practice retreat) take place.
